max-lease-time and default-lease-time relationship

I would like to revisit the relationship between max-lease-time and default-lease-time.
The current document example show these to be the same
The handbook and man documentation doesn't detail the interaction beyond a hint in the default-lease-time about the duration requested by a client... but how does this behave in the context of mac-address affinity for example.
