Probably we are headed to release candidate on the 4.x maint's unless
something happens, so the earliest we could consider this would be for
the next maint cycle...

Probably we can do this in 4.2.

I'd really rather the interface/socket code could have this selected
at runtime than compile time, but that is probably far away.
