Strange DHCP errors - stopped working

I have been using dhclient for many months now on
Debian  etch (packges dhcp3-client and dhcp3-common,
3.0.04-13), dhclient version isc-dhclient-V3.0.4.

I've never had a problem with it until today, when I
booted up and dhclient was unable to obtain an
address, almost as if the network cable was unplugged:

I called my cable provider and they were able to see
and reset my cable modem and the technician could see
my system request an IP address on his end. I've
connected the same modem and cable to another computer
and am able to get an address and go online
flawlessly.

I haven't made any recent changes to this system. Is
there anywhere I should check, or something I can try
(that I haven't tried in the past nine hours)?

It's an Abit motherboard with built-in ethernet and
audio. The only change I've made to the system in
recent weeks is connect audio speakers to the back,
and I noticed that since connecting the speakers, xmms
or another audio program will occasionally fail,
reporting that another device is using the audio -- I
suspect IRQ conflict.

Anyway, I'm very stuck after all day at this and
