All Resource Record types are used for several protocols (for
instance, A records are used by HTTP but not only. that's one of the
reasons why wildcards in a zone like ".com" are bad: they break
non-HTTP protocols.)
MX are an exception: they are tied to a specific service, email, so
you can do tricks with them (wildcards, again) which are
application-specific, without fearing you'll break something else.
[And MX should be deprecated, we should use SRV for everything, but it
is another matter.]
