Google gave me a little help with the core file:
warning: Missing the separate debug info file:
/usr/lib/debug/.build-id/ac/2eeb206486bb7315d6ac4cd64de0cb50838f
f6.debug
Core was generated by `/usr/sbin/named -u named'.
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.

(gdb) backtrace
#0 0x001a7996 in _start () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2

#2 0x00000002 in ?? ()
#3 0x444e536e in ?? ()
#4 0x00000000 in ?? ()
Going through the core files... (there are several). It looks like
they all bomb at the same place:
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.
#0 0x001a7996 in _start () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2
