A wildcard is possible but (a) bad news and (b) it will NOT affect the
domain name itself!

A blank CNAME (a) won't work (bad syntax) and (b) means that "www" may
have no other resource records - a name with a CNAME record may not have
any other resource records.

You are right about the incorrectness of "www @", I suspect that the
person posting that (and the subsequent correction attempts) is mis-
remembering what is in his or her zone file.
