named.conf cannot be changed

Again, I think I just read something about this, and it points to
/etc/sysconfig/named.  Not sure exactly what the parameter is, but I don't
have the param in that file on my SLES9 box.

Are you running chroot'ed?  If so, the files will be copied each time you
stat the server.  I don't have particulars on that, but these are two paths
to pursue.
