Weird characters appended after filename

Logs didn't tell me anything.  However, your explanation was helpful.
I tried another zone transfer, and when the temporary db file got created
I checked netstat and found a
   SYN_SENT

Apparently the firewall is letting through port 53 udp, but not port
53 tcp.
