Hello,

First, sorry for the length of this e-mail, I just want to be as thorough
as possible.

I am having a very strange problem with the domain "fannindemocrats.org".
(We are NOT authoritative for this domain.)

I have 3 DNS servers. NS1 and NS2 are running Bind 9.2.3 on FreeBSD 4.8
and NS3 is running DJBDNS (TinyDNS, an internal DNSCache and an external
DNSCache) also on FreeBSD 4.8. NS1 is the master. NS2 and NS3 are slaves.

On the BIND servers, I cannot query anything on the "fannindemocrats.org"
domain.

ns1# host fannindemocrats.org
Host not found, try again.
ns1#

ns2# host fannindemocrats.org
Host not found, try again.
ns2#

But it does work on NS3.

ns3# host fannindemocrats.org
fannindemocrats.org has address 216.97.23.154
fannindemocrats.org mail is handled (pri=10) by mail.fannindemocrats.org
ns3#

My resolv.conf has:
ns1# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 0.0.0.0
ns1#

ns2# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 0.0.0.0
ns2#

ns3# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 127.0.0.1
ns3#

and the hosts files do not have a listing for fannindemocrats.org.

ns1# grep fannindemocrats.org /etc/hosts
ns1#

ns2# grep fannindemocrats.org /etc/hosts
ns2#

ns3# grep fannindemocrats.org /etc/hosts
ns3#

A whois lookup shows the authoritative name servers to be NS.NTES.NET and
NS2.NTES.NET and I can directly query them from the name servers and it
resolves properly.

ns1# host fannindemocrats.org NS.NTES.NET
Using domain server:
Name: NS.NTES.NET
Addresses: 216.97.100.65

fannindemocrats.org has address 216.97.23.154
fannindemocrats.org mail is handled (pri=10) by mail.fannindemocrats.org
ns1# host fannindemocrats.org NS2.NTES.NET
Using domain server:
Name: NS2.NTES.NET
Addresses: 216.97.101.65

fannindemocrats.org has address 216.97.23.154
fannindemocrats.org mail is handled (pri=10) by mail.fannindemocrats.org
ns1#

ns2# host fannindemocrats.org NS.NTES.NET
Using domain server:
Name: NS.NTES.NET
Addresses: 216.97.100.65

fannindemocrats.org has address 216.97.23.154
fannindemocrats.org mail is handled (pri=10) by mail.fannindemocrats.org
ns2# host fannindemocrats.org NS2.NTES.NET
Using domain server:
Name: NS2.NTES.NET
Addresses: 216.97.101.65

fannindemocrats.org has address 216.97.23.154
fannindemocrats.org mail is handled (pri=10) by mail.fannindemocrats.org
ns2#

ns3# host fannindemocrats.org NS.NTES.NET
Using domain server:
Name: NS.NTES.NET
Addresses: 216.97.100.65

fannindemocrats.org has address 216.97.23.154
fannindemocrats.org mail is handled (pri=10) by mail.fannindemocrats.org
ns3# host fannindemocrats.org NS2.NTES.NET
Using domain server:
Name: NS2.NTES.NET
Addresses: 216.97.101.65

fannindemocrats.org has address 216.97.23.154
fannindemocrats.org mail is handled (pri=10) by mail.fannindemocrats.org
ns3#

But any query to NS1 and NS2 for the domain "fannindemocrats.org" fail.

There is not a zone record for the domain "fannindemocrats.org" in my
named.conf files.

ns1# grep fannindemocrats.org *named.conf
ns1#

ns2# grep fannindemocrats.org *named.conf
ns2#

and I know I do not have a zones file for the domain.

ns1# ls -l /etc/namedb/master-files | grep fannindemocrats.org
ns1#

ns2# ls -l /etc/namedb/slave-files | grep fannindemocrats.org
ns2#

I did a query from NS1 to NS2

ns1# host fannindemocrats.org ns2.texoma.net
Using domain server:
Name: ns2.texoma.net
Addresses: 209.151.96.66

Host not found, try again.
ns1#

and NS2's log showed

ns2# grep fannindemocrats.org named.log

As far as I know, this is the only domain that shows this behavior.

Any ideas or suggestions on what could be the issue?

Thank you for your help!

Sincerely,

Barrett (Barry) W. Clark
