You can ignore the -g option. As long as the user that you specify in -u
has a default group (which it does), named is going to take the group from
that.
As for your problems with xdm, make sure that your box has a hostname set.
What is the output of 'hostname' ?? Second, make sure that your box'
hostname is in /etc/hosts and either defined with the correct IP (see
ifconfig), or 127.0.0.1. Once this is done, restart xdm, and you should be
ok.
