Barry,
What is better about 8.4.x than 8.3.x? Is it anything other than
IPv6 support? There was a big discussion on this recently but it never
got answered.

I think all recent changes to 8.3.x have been security fixes. 8.3 isn't
even the most recent subrelease of BIND 8; if there's some reason you=20
can't upgrade to BIND 9, you should at least go to 8.4.x.
