Though I have never used wildcard CNAMEs, I suppose they are very
useful if you run a web hosting service that offers names like

  bob.example.com
  jim.example.com
  joe.example.com

which are all to be served as virtual servers by the same Apache
server. If you have a wildcard CNAME like

  *.example.com. IN CNAME www.example.com.

you need to add new customers like sue.example.com only to the Apache
configuration, while the DNS is already there.
