Use whois.  If you don't have access, use the web whois at Network
Solutions.

By definition a registered host is included in the domain for .COM.  DNS
servers that don't know about your domain will check the .COM domain to find
out how to contact your servers.  Since they get an answer from the .COM
servers, they don't check yours.
