Legit CNAME or not?

Hello,

Actually, I would just as soon lose the cname...however, I am not sure how
best to fix it.

My MX record points to desert.turbowarp.net; my ptr points to 198.78.66.83
- turbowarp.net.  I have a cname record for desert.turbowarp.net
turbowarp.net.

I set the mail A record for the mail server so that it would resolve
forward and reverse.

It just seems confusing and screwing to me.  It it proper to have the
cname and domain name the same?
