Load balancing question

I think this qualifies as a FAQ by now, if it isn't already. :-) BIND,
and hopefully other DNS servers as well, will start out by randomly
querying authorative servers, but after a while be able to pinpoint
which one responds more quickly.

So, if you've got one authorative server in Chicago, one in Europe,
one in Australia and one in Canada (just to mention a few examples),
and you yourself are in Chicago, it is very likely that the Chicago
server will be the fastest one to respond (round-trip-time-wise), and
so it will be preferred over the others. Every now and then, the
others will be tried to see if they have become any faster. (At least
this is the case with the root servers, and I don't belive they are an
exception.)
