A plea for posting complete information

This is a plea to people submitting questions to the bind-users list,
or comp.protocols.dns.bind newsgroup, requesting that complete
information be supplied with the question. Questions without complete
information are commonly replied to with "please tell us more so that
we can help you" type responses.

Complete information could include:

    1.	BIND configuration file - named.conf
    2.	Zone file(s)
    3.	Log file(s) - syslogd and/or named logs

It may not be initally obvious what information may be useful, and
supplying everything may not be desired. So, please think about the
reported problem and what may be necessary to supply an answer.

It would also be extremely helpful if, instead of stating that your
server can't resolve the "foo.bar" domain, that you actually identify
the real domain in question. This allows the members of the DNS/BIND
community the opportunity to actually try to duplicate the problems
that you are experiencing. Obviously, this will not be possbile if
you are asking about a private DNS zone.

What is prompting request this is a reasonably long running thread
about a problem someone was reporting. A solution was obtained, but in
my response I stated that it "sounded like" the name server log
messages were possibly being sent to /dev/null. The original poster
then replied that the logs were set to null, and "whoops".

If the configuration file were supplied with the original posting,
then this problem may have been quickly solved. As is, ...

Thank you for your patience,

Bill Larson
