recursive/iterative mode

I have one more question for you !

Does the root servers respond to DNS request only in iterative mode ?
Because I tried to make a recursive request www.yahoo.com to a root server
and he respond me only the adress of the server which is authoritative on
the .com domain !
And how can I make that my DNS server respond only in iterative mode if iti
is possible ?
