DESTDIR?

I'm running RH 6.2 and have tried to install bind 8.2.3 in its own dir being
/usr/local/bind823
instead of the default.

Here is what I've done:

make clean
make depend
make all
make install DESTDIR=/usr/local/bind823

is this suppose to be how to redirect the install??, I want everything
installed in bind823

please help,...I've tried this twice now,..and it still installs everything
in the default dir...
