Sure there is. The primary thing I've seen people trying to use
CNAMEs for is when they have an old name that they want to ensure
still works, but they don't want to maintain all that separate data,
so they want to alias it to the new domain name that they want to
create.
Think also of the case where there is a merger or a buyout
involving at least two companies, and only one of the names is being
kept -- you don't want to just throw away all the old customers the
day the merger/acquisition is complete, do you? Surely a large part
of what you're getting in a merger/acquisition is the established
customer base, so why would you want to alienate them like that?
