rfc1035 has a size limits section.

DNS labels may not exceed 63 octets.

Hostnames should follow hostname conventions, which are
shorter but hostnames have nothing to do with DNS *8-)

You can probably customise it, anything is possible in
software, but don't expect anything else to work with a
customised version.
