DNS query when using IP address

When you ping a reverse lookup is performed - man ping provides the option:
-n Numeric output only. No attempt will be made to lookup symbolic
names for host addresses.
Which should do what you want - although I'd worry if the occasional reverse
lookup from Ping was such a problem.

Subject: DNS query when using IP address
when I do a ping direclty to an IP address in my network,
I see that a DNS query is sent to the DNS server.
Why?
How can I switch this off?
The network is pure RedHat 6.2
The option 'DNS required for normal operation' is switched off in linuxconf.
Thanks for any hints!
Albrecht
