Urk.  My bad.  I wasn't looking for aliases (CNAME RRs) when a query for an 
A RR failed.

Section 5.2.2 of RFC 1034 shed sufficient light on this for me to resolve 
my problem.  As it were.  Thanks to Barry and Eric for their comments as well.
