Turn on debugging in nslookup.
Without the final period nslookup is applying the search list
which is terminating early. The debugging output will show you
the query that is failing.
Note: if a zone has detected a error when loading named will
produce SERVFAIL for unknown names or queries for which records
of the given type do not exist if they fall within the scope of
the zone. SERVFAIL terminates the search.
