Up to 1000 CNAMEs in a zone, will it work ???

The gTLD servers that run the .COM domain, have more than 4 (5?)
million names in the same zone. Take a h-ll of a lot of memory (about
1.5 GB!), and quite some time to load (10-15 min.), but runs well with
standard BIND once it's all in there.
