On starting BIND nothing else works....

You probably have a reverse lookup problem (mapping IP addresses to
hostnames). Most network daemons like telnetd and so on like to find
out the names of the clients that connect to them. Maybe the reverse
zone data for your machine(s) is missing or points at unreachable name
servers? Or maybe your local resolver settings are wrong, so the
reverse lookups are sent to an unreachable name server? Or maybe
things like telnetd, ftpd and so on don't know to use the DNS to do
reverse lookups?
