caching server?

I've confused myself on this.  I have one server running 8.2.1 as a
primary and all is fine.  Now, I want another box to not be a server of
any kind except for it's own lookups.  I know I need the hints file, but
do I need to run named as a deamon, or just have the machine's ip in the
/etc/resolv.conf?

yup, probably stupid question, but I've gotten confused
